Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. IS IT LEGAL TO SELL ALLIGATOR AND CROCODILE PRODUCTS?

  2. OF COURSE IT IS LEGAL! Alligators were considered an endangered species for about a ten-year period. However, since around 1980, they have been legal in the United States but controlled by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the guidelines of the International Convention known as CITES. As an importer of both skins and finished products, we are licensed by the Fish and Wildlife Service, and each product imported or exported must be inspected and approved by the local governing authorities. This insures that the products or skins were farm raised with CITES permits or wild animals have documentation that refers to CITES permits.

  3. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALLIGATOR AND CROCODILE?

    • The alligators used to produce our belts, wallets, and handbags are indigenous to the southern United States with the largest population residing in Florida and Louisana. The skins are then tanned and manufactured in Italy exclusively for B.D. Jeffries. Alligator skins vary in tile shapes and sizes. However, the majority of them have more square tiles taken from the belly and tail of the alligator. We are able to use the entire alligator skin when producing belts and wallets accounting for a larger variation in tiles.
    • B.D. Jeffries offers crocodile products indigenous to South America. The skins are manufactured and tanned in South America and Italy. Since we only use the flank or side of the crocodile, the tiles are more rounded. This is the softest and most desirable part of the skin.
    • B.D. Jeffries' alligator and crocodile products are of similar quality. Therefore, the choice is handed over to the customer to decide aesthetically which skin is right for them.

  4. WILL THE SKIN ON THE PRODUCT I RECEIVE LOOK JUST LIKE THE PRODUCT SHOWN ON THE WEB SITE OR IN THE CATALOG?

  5. Alligators and crocodiles naturally grow in different shapes and sizes. Each product is hand cut from different parts of the skin making a truly unique product. The skins are also dyed in lots and individually glazed by hand. Therefore, there will be slight differences in color from skin to skin even from the same dye lot. The inherent natural beauty of the skin, and the uniqueness of each item adds to the panache of purchasing an alligator or crocodile product.

  6. HOW LONG WILL OUR ALLIGATOR OR CROCODILE PRODUCTS LAST?

  7. This will depend on several factors such as care of the product or how often it is used. Alligator and crocodile skins are very durable luxury products. We recommend a special leather care and polish that will enhance the life of your purchase. We have many customers who have purchased belts over eight years ago, and they look as good today as when they were new.

  8. WHAT CAN I GET FOR THE MAN THAT HAS EVERYTHING? "HE JUST HAS EVERYTHING, AND IF HE DOES WANT SOMETHING HE JUST BUYS IT"!

  9. This is one of our most common questions at B.D. Jeffries. We always like to find out a little about the person such as his hobbies or lifestyle. We then point the customer in the direction of our great lifestyle section or men's store to accommodate his interests. However, if you still cannot find a gift, it is always a good choice to purchase one of our many items from our extensive alligator and crocodile collection.

  10. WHAT SIZE BELT SHOULD I ORDER FOR A MAN IF I KNOW HIS WAIST SIZE?

  11. We usually recommend that you order a belt one size above your actual pant size. All of our belts are made in 2" increments. Therefore, if you wear a 34" or 35" pant, we recommend a 36" belt. If this size is still not correct, we will be happy to immediately return or exchange the size for the correct one.

  12. DO ALL OF YOUR BELT STRAPS COME WITH HOLES?

  13. When you are placing an order for just an alligator or crocodile belt strap, it is very important to specify if the strap needs holes or not. Specific buckles such as our slide buckles do not require holes. Other buckles, however, contain prongs, which require holes in the strap. Please let us know how you would like your belt, and if you make a mistake we will exchange it as soon as possible.

  14. HOW DO I DETERMINE THE CORRECT SIZE FOR A WOMAN'S BELT?

  15. Women's sizing chart for belts
